Bagasse Cogeneration – Global Review and Potential June 2004
Executive Summary. Bagasse cogeneration describes the use of fibrous sugarcane waste – bagasse – to cogenerate heat and electricity at high efficiency in sugar mills.
This report indicates that there is abundant opportunity for the wider use of bagasse-based cogeneration in sugarcane-producing countries and to contribute substantially to high efficiency energy production. Yet this potential remains largely unexploited. The potential to make a meaningful contribution to the energy balance is especially great in Cuba, Brazil, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Colombia, Mexico and The Philippines. Overall, the potential in these countries (which account for 70% of global cane production) reaches as high as 25% in Cuba and, as an average, a significant 7.45% of total demand. The potential, in absolute terms, is also high in China.

Renewable Energy
Renewable energy has to supply a greater share of the world's energy requirements. Renewables confer a number of major benefits compared to other energy pathways - energy security, a stable climate, cleaner air, and new employment opportunities - and the resources are truly vast.
It is estimated that the market for clean energy technologies could be worth $1.9 trillion by 2020. The financial sector has a key role to play in developing and promoting this market. Renewable energy is both a solution and a business opportunity. However, there
are still some significant barriers to capturing this promise. The most important thing that policymakers can do is create confidence in the longterm future of the renewables market
by policies that make "the deal on the table" attractive financially.

Resumen. El trabajo analiza la importancia que tiene sobre la rentabilidad de un proyecto de cogeneración, la relación entre el consumo de vapor u otras energías térmicas y la demanda de energía eléctrica en una planta operativa o empresa de servicios.
Impacts of US federal energy efficiency standards for residential appliances
S. Meyers *, J.E. McMahon, M. McNeil, X. Liu
Abstract. This study estimated energy, environmental, and consumer impacts of US federal residential energy efficiency standards taking effect in the 1988–2007 period. These standards have been the subject of indepth analyses conducted as part of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) standards rulemaking process. This study drew on those analyses, but updated key data and developed a common framework and assumptions for all of the products. We estimate that the considered standards will reduce residential primary energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 8–9% in 2020 compared to the levels expected without any standards. The standards will save a cumulative total of 26–32 EJ (25–30 quads) by the year 2015, and 63 EJ (60 quads) by 2030. The estimated cumulative net present value of consumer benefit amounts to nearly US$80 billion by 2015, and grows to US$130 billion by 2030. The overall benefit/cost ratio of cumulative consumer impacts in the 1987–2050 period is 2.75:1. The cumulative cost of the DOE’s program to establish and implement the standards is in the range of US$200–US$250 million. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

PEPS CASE STUDY The Pemex- Conae Collaboration in Energy Efficiency Actions and Programs
Summary. Mexico’s National Commission for Energy Conservation (Conae) has supported energy efficiency actions in the National Oil Company (Pemex) for more than ten years. The strategy used has evolved from the analysis of isolated systems to the development of an Internet-based diagnostics and consultation system capable of reaching a great number of users, and finally to the implementation of a permanent energy efficiency campaign in Pemex with significant environmental and economic results. This collaboration process has helped Conae to develop new analysis tools and managerial strategies that have also been used in other programs implemented by Conae. In 2001 Pemex achieved savings of 10.6 million barrels of oil or nearly 200 million dollars. 3.2 million tons of CO2 emissions were avoided as a result of these savings.

World Survey of Decentralized Energy 2004
WADE’s ‘World Survey of Decentralized Energy 2002/03’ was published in October 2002. It was the first time that such a quantitative assessment had been attempted and its development faced a number of data collection challenges that remain largely in place. Despite this, this updated Worldwide DE Survey – 2004 contains a great deal of information and analysis that is based on new data and assessments derived from the detailed market knowledge of WADE and its members. Section 3 presents this market data. This Section assesses the main market drivers of 2003 and looks ahead to what we can expect in 2004 and beyond.
